The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested 10 persons during a secret meeting of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at a private school in the Okutukutu axis of Yenagoa, the state capital.
The meeting is believed to be part of a plan to unleash mayhem in some parts of Bayelsa State by the group.
A book entitled “The Chain of One Nigeria Broken (The story of our journey to freedom)” was also seized from the suspects during the raid on the meeting by security agents.
Residents of the area told Daily Trust that the arrest took place on Tuesday afternoon following a tip-off and detailed surveillance of a private school, Divine Brain Primary School, located in the area.
The suspects were taken to the Bayelsa State Police Command for profiling.
“The suspects were arrested by plainclothes and uniformed police officers when they stormed the area,” said a resident in the area.
Many residents moved into their homes to avoid being caught on the wrong side of the law. We were shocked when they brought out people in handcuffs from the school. He said, “We thought the school was empty.”.
The ten people arrested include a lawyer and the headmaster of the school.
SP Asinim Butswat, spokesman for Bayelsa State Police Command, in a statement that appears to confirm the incident, warned members of the general public to shun any association with the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (lPOB).
He said intelligence gathered by the Command indicates that some misguided elements are planning to set-up IPOB cells in the State, indicating that Police Operatives are on their trail and monitoring their activities.
He said: “The Command will deal decisively with any person or group attempting to disrupt the peaceful security situation in the State.”.
He advised the people of Bayelsa State to go about their lawful and legitimate business, as the security agencies are on the ground to ensure that peace and order are maintained in the state.
