A gathering of PDP officials from the North that concluded in the early hours of Saturday morning failed to reach an agreement.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and Governors Aminu Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed all refused the elders’ request to step down and endorse one of the candidates.

Only former bank president Mohammed Hayatu-Deen decided to step down.

Party leaders are reportedly making frantic efforts for the major candidates to present a united front in the wake of the near prospect of Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike securing the nomination.

A person familiar with the late-night discussion stated, “Many of them do not believe Wike can win the general election, but it is nearly certain that he can coast to victory if the northern candidates do not close ranks.”

Meanwhile, delegates and party leaders have begun to arrive at the MKO Abiola Stadium, site of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primary (PDP).

Tambuwal, Mohammed, and Saraki’s campaign posters are competing for space at the event venue.

Even though he has withdrew from the race, Muhammed Hayatu-campaign Deen’s posters are still visible throughout the arena.

Daily Trust also learned that the official start time of the convention is 4 p.m., despite the absence of official information to that effect.

Contenders are reportedly engaging in last-minute horse dealing and consultations with other aspirants and delegates in the hopes that the pendulum may swing in their favour.
