Asiwaju Bola Tinubu offered Atiku Abubakar the position of VP in 2007, but he rejected it Bola Tinubu wanted to be my running mate, but I refused – Atiku
When Atiku lost his first presidential race in 2009, Tinubu asked to be his running mate, but Tinubu refused. Atiku was Olusegun Obasanjo’s deputy from 1999 until 2007.
During his campaign to succeed Obasanjo, Atiku had a falling out with Obasanjo, but Tinubu played a key role in the founding of the Action Congress (AC), a party that Atiku joined following the 1999 political “Tsunami” that rocked the Alliance for Democracy (AD) governors.
The foundation for AC was established by Tinubu at the end of his second tenure as Lagos governor, on which Fashola was chosen as his successor as Minister of Works and Housing.
President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigerians Peoples Party (ANPP) placed second in the election, which was won by the late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
With 32 seats in the House of Representatives and 6 in the Senate under its belt, the AC was a formidable force in the National Assembly.
During a meeting of the PDP’s Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Atiku argued that the opposition party should not be compelled to embrace zoning in the 2023 presidential campaign.
He also denied rumours that he was seeking to prevent the South-East from receiving the PDP Presidential nomination.
As a member of the party, we came up with and implemented this zoning strategy because we wanted every section of the country to feel like a part of the whole.”
When all the PDP governors came in 2003 and urged I should run and I said no, many of you were part of our administration.” As a result of our agreement, I see no reason to object to this.
“We made sure that we retained the policy, even if some of those governors who backed me went to jail or were expelled from their positions. Because of this, you cannot claim that the PDP has not adhered to the zoning policy.”
‘The many years of the PDP government were all from the South, eight years and six years. As a result, the opposing party should not be allowed to crush us. They cannot avoid their moral duty.
“There are many who argue that the Southeast has been denied a fair shot. When my buddy Bola (Tinubu) invited me to join the Action Congress (AC) he put me a series of criteria, one of which was that I had to appoint him Vice President. In response to Atiku saying no, “I’m not going to make you Vice President,” Atiku stated, “instead, I picked Senator Ben Obi,” Atiku said.
Atiku and Tinubu are two of the leading contenders for the PDP and APC presidential nominations, respectively.
Atiku went on to say that he took another Obi by chance when he received the ticket to run in 2019 again.
It’s absurd to claim that the South-East is being excluded from political involvement or power-sharing in any way.
Since you’ve expressed doubts about this, I thought I’d clear things up for you,” he continued. “As an enlightened political class, I don’t believe there is any conscious policy to prohibit anyone from this nation.”
