Alhaji Salihu Mohammad Lukman, the deputy national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the North West, has stated that political actors should de-emphasize concerns of religion and ethnicity when selecting a running mate for the party’s candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Christian organisations have cautioned against a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the run-up to the general elections of 2023, sparking a firestorm of controversy.

Lukman, a member of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) and former director-general of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), said in a Saturday statement in Abuja headlined Issues for the APC 2023 presidential campaign that the focus should be on advancing Nigeria.

He stated that APC leaders must recognise that the 2023 elections present another golden opportunity for the party to reinvent itself, adding that despite the landmark initiatives of the Buhari administration over the past seven years, opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are using challenges of insecurity to claim that the APC has failed.

Let the north pick your running mate, MURIC tells Tinubu

“The 2023 presidential campaigns must not reduce substantive debates about Nigeria’s progress to emotive ethnic and religious factors.” If the truth be known, Islam and Christianity, as well as all of our ethnic characteristics, have been utilised in equal measure to halt Nigeria.
