Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that he will not run for president in 2023.
He said this in response to rumours circulating that he may shortly enter the contest.
“Our attention has been called to insinuations that Nigerians should not be surprised if the INEC Chairman enters the contest for president, or that he is being urged to do so.
“This is an absurd proposition. In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi, Yakubu stated that it will not occur.
According to him, the Chairman remains dedicated to free, fair, and credible elections as an impartial arbiter.
Oyekanmi stated, “His constitutional responsibilities as the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Federation and Returning Officer for the presidential election are too burdensome for him to even consider straying into extraneous matters contrary to the law, morality, and his own personal principles.”
The chairman will continue to carry out his duties without favour or animosity toward any political party or candidate.”
