On Saturday, Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, said the country would be better off if Asiwaju Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), were elected.

The senator from Kwara Central, who could not get a flight home, has also promised to support Tinubu’s election.

The question of whether he and his followers will contribute to the party’s overall performance in the state was off-limits, though.

The federal legislator said this at a reception hosted by his family and supporters in Ilorin: “It is payback time by Kwarans for the APC presidential candidate.”

He claimed that Tinubu and the party’s best interests kept him a loyal APC member despite the “charade” of the APC primaries.

He explained that he voted for Tinubu because he believes the APC presidential candidate has what it takes to steer the country in the correct direction.

“Despite all that occurred to me in the state primaries, I will continue to be an APC member. Since 2010, I’ve been invested in the fight for Kwara’s advancement.

I feel compelled to remain an APC member so that we may work together to fix the party’s current crisis in the state. Importantly, I met with Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, soon after the primaries. We discussed the results of the primaries and decided to move on.

It’s important to me that the Nigerian project succeeds. Asiwaju Tinubu currently has the most potential and is most open to change, making him the ideal candidate. For this reason, come the 2023 elections, I and my friends will be actively campaigning for Tinubu and Senator Shettima.

Our benefactor, Asiwaju Tinubu, has been consistently backing our efforts in Kwara. I ran for the Nigerian Senate in 2011 as a candidate for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), with Tinubu at the helm. He was a big backer of the ‘Otoge’ campaign in 2018–19, and I owe a lot to that fight. Why should I now state that no matter what happens to me in the primaries, I will leave Asiwaju out of self-interest? Never. Tinubu has proven himself to be capable, so I’m willing to back him. For the sake of my home state of Kwara, I am also backing him. Oloriegbe stressed that there was no hidden agenda behind his words.
