Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, stated that he remains dedicated to the vision of a new Nigeria despite the outcomes of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Special Convention for its Presidential Primary on Wednesday.
Osinbajo addressed at the campaign office of The Progressive Project (TPP), a coalition of groups that supported the Vice President’s candidacy for the presidency.
The vice president also indicated that he will back Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the winner and flagbearer of the APC in the 2023 presidential election.
At the TPP Office in Abuja, a big crowd greeted the vice president.
In his address to the crowd of supporters, the Yemi Osinbajo vice president referred to the movement for a new Nigeria.
“This movement is also a movement within a political party; we are not doing anything unprecedented.” What is new is our conviction that a new Nigeria is conceivable, and that it is possible through our efforts.”
“We attended the convention, and the results made it abundantly evident that we lost, but this is merely a battle, not the war. We shall win the war for a new Nigeria, despite the upcoming conflicts. I have no doubt that we will win the war to establish a new Nigeria.
“Because of this, our campaign for a new Nigeria must stay strong and unyielding. And we will do everything in our power to preserve our movement robust and stable.”
Despite the outcome of the APC Presidential Primary, according to the Vice President, “the hope of a new country is alive and thriving… In the back of our thoughts, we will keep in mind that what you have begun in the various movements is the germ that will give birth to a new nation. You and I are aware that the time has come, and we shall devote ourselves fully to it.
“I am devoted and will continue to be committed to that dream (of a new Nigeria) so long as you are willing and recognise that we have not yet written the history of this country, that we have not yet concluded the history of this country. In fact, the story has just began, and this movement has just begun.”
“A new Nigeria has just begun, and it will be evident across the entire nation that a new Nigeria has been born. Once the genie has been released, it cannot be rebottled. It is time for a New Nigeria; the word has been spoken and cannot be taken back.
Osinbajo recalled the personal letter he sent to Tinubu congratulating him on his victory in the party’s primaries when he pledged his support for the APC’s 2023 presidential nominee.
“In that letter, I told him that the American ideal, the dream of a new nation, is still alive and thriving. And I want you to know in your hearts that when we compete in a contest and the results are declared, we are democratic.
“Regardless of the outcomes, we adhere to them because there is only one democratic process, regardless of whether it is good or bad, and we have gone through that process.
“In this process, a winner has been determined, but it does not extinguish the hope for a prosperous future. We will support our party and its candidate, as we recognise that the opposing side is not even worthy of consideration. Therefore, we will support our party’s candidate by doing all possible.”
Osinbajo, in thanking Nigerians at home and abroad, as well as Osinbajo fan groups, for their overwhelming backing of his presidential campaign, remarked, “When we began this race, I never imagined that so many young men and women would believe so fervently in the idea of a new Nigeria.”
