Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has claimed that All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has given him a position in the Senate.
While the opposition party was being rocked by a crisis, Tinubu and Wike reportedly met in London last month.
After meeting with Tinubu, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar flew to the United Kingdom, where he met with Wike.
The meeting between Atiku and Wike and his supporters did little to ease tensions, as Wike asked that Senator Iyioricha Ayu step down from his position as National Chairman of the party before calm could be restored.
Some of those who, like Wike, lost the PDP presidential nomination have said that the governor is a poor loser.
On Friday, Wike responded to the allegations during a live TV show by saying, “I didn’t contest so I may become a vice presidential candidate, I am not like others who were not serious and bought senatorial form beside presidential form.” I would have run for senator had I wanted power or to be in a position of authority. But I declined. That’s a guy that has strong morals and values justice, fairness, and equality. Thus, there is no internal rhyme in the analysis.
Besides the APC’s Tinubu, I’ve been approached by members of the Democratic Party, the Libertarian Party, and the Labour Party. All of these groups see my value and want to work with me to assure victory in the 2023 election. But I have rejected every offer made to me by those organisations.
If the party wins the presidency in 2023, Wike claims Ayu wants the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The Nigerian people “would shake their heads if they hear a lot of things occurring on today in the party that wants to take over the reign of power,” Wike added.
It’s clear that when we discussed Ayu, most people had no idea what was at stake. Ayu has an ambition to hold a position of authority. In order to guarantee his presence, he has set his sights on the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation should we (the PDP) be elected. You know that these viewpoints have been discussed, and that now they are trying to convince’small lads’ like us to act as if we have no idea what is going on.
Most of you don’t know what’s going on at the party, so it’s easy for me to tell you that. The job of senate president has been appointed. Who am I to sit here on national television and pretend to know something I don’t? However, there are some things that we simply cannot discuss here due to concerns over privacy and confidentiality.
