During operations conducted separately, the Somali National Army (SNA) killed 50 al-Shabaab militants. Earlier, SNA’s elite Danab forces killed 15 al-Shabaab militants in South Juba’s Lower Juba region.
We killed about 15 al-Shabaab militants, injured others, and destroyed several hideouts in Lower Juba,” Ali Hashi Abdi, SNA spokesman in Mogadishu, said.
Operations will continue against al-Shabaab in Lower Juba and other areas, he said.
An al-Shabab militant was killed in an area near Baadweyn town in Mudug region, central Somalia, by the SNA on Monday evening, with the assistance of regional paramilitaries from the Galmudug region.
SNA radio Mogadishu reported that SNA infantry commander Mohamed Tahlil Bihi said the forces recovered weapons; he noted that several senior militants were also killed in the operation.
According to Bihi, approximately 35 terrorists and 15 others were killed by SNA and Galmudug State forces near Baadweyn town in Qaycad.
The joint forces liberated several areas in Mudug and Galgudud which were held by al-Shabaab militants.
As of this writing, al-Shabaab, an extremist group linked to al-Qaeda, has not commented on the latest security operation by government forces that has intensified actions against al-Shabaab militants in central and southern Somalia.
