According to the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), 76 corpses have been recovered from the boat mishap in Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State’s Tshohuwar Labata village.
Birma Yusuf, the Area Manager of NIWA in the state, told Daily Trust that the search operation was still ongoing and more corpses were expected to be found.
Corpses were recovered near where the ghastly accident occurred on the Niger River.
Yusuf complained about the authority’s poor equipment for rescue missions.
According to him, the Kebbi State government should assist the authority with water boats so that they can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of rescue operations.
We have recovered 76 bodies so far. Overloading and using old boats are always blamed on boat operators.”
