A customs officer kidnapped in Ogun State on Tuesday has been discovered dead.
Smugglers attacked a Customs patrol unit in Yewa South Local Government Area, abducting two customs officials.
On Wednesday, a corpse was discovered in a river near Fagbohun hamlet in the local government.
He was located after hours of searching near the river where his corpse was discarded.
On Tuesday afternoon, policemen from the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, which includes Lagos and Ogun State, were ambushed.
Customs Controller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, Ikeja, Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu, claimed suspected smugglers assaulted several customs officials on a patrol team on October 16, 2021, at Shagamu Interchange.
The controller said the cops confronted 24 suspected smuggled rice cars, 12 of which were being evacuated to FOU Headquarters in Lagos.
“Two cops were macheted and treated successfully. On Tuesday, October 26, suspected smugglers attacked another patrol squad in Ogun State’s Yewa South Local Government Area and seized two policemen.
“Two cops were reported missing Tuesday. The policemen’ bodies were recovered in a river in Ajegun-Iyaloosa hamlet on Wednesday morning. His firearm was recovered nearby.
“The hunt for the second missing officer continued until Friday, when his corpse was recovered. His rifle’s strap was still on him when his corpse was discovered, but his firearm was gone.
We are all their offspring, and no life is more precious than another. Otherwise, the news would have been all over. This will be my final appearance on broadcast to address the assault and death of a Customs officer. I’ll have to invoke our Code of Conduct. “Officers will henceforth protect themselves when attacked without provocation,” he stated.
