A wedding accident in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State resulted in at least 13 deaths and many injuries among wedding guests.
On Sunday, September 26, a Coaster bus carrying passengers and a truck collided near Akpoku-Udufor.
An observer, who provided photos from the scene, said that the bus was transporting people from a village in Etche to the neighbouring state of Imo for the traditional marriage of a Chief Ambrose Igbokwe Nwuzi to his third wife.
Thirty minutes after the bus took off, it collided with a truck, killing over 13 of its passengers.
According to those present, most of the deceased were parents, so the community is still in shock.
According to a source in the area, Chibuike, the two vehicles collided head-on. Chibuike said the accident was due to overspeeding, adding that the bus swerved many times after the collision.
Among the dead were the groom’s younger brother and his wife.
Eleven people died on the spot, and two others died on their way to the hospital.
Nnamdi Omoni, a spokesman for the Rivers State Police Command who confirmed the incident, said five copses were recovered from the scene.
Yes, I’m aware of it. Five bodies were recovered from the scene and deposited at the hospital. A number of injured people were taken to the hospital. I’m not sure if there were more deaths.” he said.
