An apartment building fell overnight in Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s commercial hub, killing six people, including two children.
Rescuers used torches to sift through the broken concrete and found 36 individuals alive. An ambulance driver clutched a baby.
“Everything trembled,” said fourth-floor resident Ladji Doumbia. “I was stumbling left to right when I heard a loud noise.”
Prime Minister Patrick Achi vowed an investigation into the cause of the accident, which happened a week after another building fell in Abidjan, killing several people.
“Some actors still do not follow basic principles and conduct acts that lead to situations like this,” Achi remarked.
Firefighters were alerted to the five-story Cocody building just after midnight. Six bodies were rescued from the rubble late Monday, the fire service said.
Thirteen persons were hospitalized. The building’s occupancy at the time of the collapse remained unknown.
