Unknown Gunmen murdered at least 11 Burkinabe troops and injured eight others on Sunday in Burkina Faso’s Est area, according to four sources in the state military.

The region is one of many affected by increased instability as jihadist organisations with ties to al Qaeda and the Islamic State strive to take control of once-peaceful territory in West Africa’s Central Sahel region.

The sources did not provide any other information on the current incident, and the government did not respond immediately.

The governing military junta took power in a January coup against President Roch Kabore, accusing him of failing to curb escalating violence by Islamist extremists in the Sahel, which has killed thousands and driven more than 2 million people to abandon their homes.
