Ben Ukpepi, Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Cross River State, has  been released by his abductors after spending 82 days in captivity. 

Irene Ugbo, the state’s Police spokesperson, confirmed his release on Monday, June 14. However, it is unclear whether a ransom was paid or not. 

On Sunday, March 21, 2021, Ukpepi was kidnapped for a second time in front of his house in CROSPIL Estate in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State. The incident took place as organized labour in the state planned a strike.
