Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo State, said Ahmed Gulak’s killing is “calculated to polarise Nigerians, especially Northerners, against the Igbo outside the South East”.
But the governor emphasized that it is important to neutralise the enemies of the people.
The statement was titled, ‘Ahmed Gulak: A Killing Too Senseless And Wicked.’
Gulak was murdered on his way to catch a flight at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
Akeredolu said in the statement that the news of the death of Ahmed Gulak, an APC chieftain and former Special Adviser on Political Matters under the last administration, in Owerri, Imo State, this morning, was shocking and disturbing.
“The details of the tragic incident are still sketchy. Several bandits are suspected of killing a man who was a visitor to Imo State, according to a press release credited to the Imo State Police Command. It is unacceptable.
One murder is too many. This is a senseless and wicked act. Its perpetrators are enemies of our country. Misleading, confusing, and destructive, this scheme was designed to do just that. These are the unmistakable, detestable marks of those seeking to cause a conflagration. Criminals must not be allowed to succeed.
“We wish to use this opportunity to express our solidarity with our brother, Hope Uzodinma, Governor of Imo state. To put an end to the bloodbath in the country, we admonish him and other Governors in the South Eastern States to take action now. The enemies of the people always employ fear as a weapon of disaffection in the polity.
The intent behind this cowardly act is to incite Nigerians against each other, particularly Northerners against Igbo living outside the South East. Our enemies must be faced with the aim of neutralizing them. Political correctness definitely isn’t needed right now. At all levels, the banditry should not be allowed to undermine the legitimacy of the current government.
We call on all security agencies to work together in order to uncover the criminal elements sponsoring and carrying out terrorist acts. It is necessary to punish them severely.
“May the soul of Ahmed Gulak, our brother who passed away, rest in perfect peace.”
