Babagana Kingibe has been appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as his Special Envoy for Chad and Lake Chad Basin Region.
Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), revealed this in a statement on Monday night.
According to Mustapha, the appointment of Kingibe as a Special Envoy coincides with the outcome of the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of Member Nations of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, concerning the situation in Chad.
In addition to monitoring developments in Chad and the Lake Chad Basin Region, Mustapha said the Special Envoy will contribute to reconciliation and smooth progress towards democratic rule when the current Transitional Military Council ends its rule.
A former running mate to the late MKO Abiola in 1993, he will collaborate with member countries and partners in the region to restore stability, promote peace and to further promote any other initiatives related to stabilizing Chad, North East Nigeria, and the Lake Chad Basin region.
Through this appointment, President Buhari has demonstrated that Nigeria is determined to lead regional security efforts that will stabilize the Lake Chad Basin Region, bring peace to Chad, and ultimately eliminate the Boko Haram Insurgency in Nigeria’s North East.”
The President has also fulfilled his promise to General Mahamat Deby Itno, the President of the Transitional Military Council of Chad, to support a seamless transition toward democratic rule when he visits Nigeria in May, 2021,” Mustapha said.
He added that Kingibe is an accomplished multi-lingual diplomat who served the nation as Federal Permanent Secretary, Secretary to the Constituent Assembly, Cabinet Minister, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
He had also participated in previous Nigeria-led Chadian reconciliation talks (Kano I and II and Lagos I and II).
