Six persons have been killed and several others abducted in Tureta local government area of Sokoto state by bandits fleeing the current military offensive in Zamfara state.
A large number of people were receiving treatment at the hospital after being injured by the marauders.
Tureta shares a border with Zamfara, where the military operation is taking place.
As a result of the current shutdown of the telecommunications network in the neighbouring state, the area is also affected.
According to reports, the attackers raided the area around 2am on Thursday.
The group deceived unsuspected members of the community by using the Muslim call to prayer.
The residents came out thinking it was dawn prayer time, and the bandits began shooting at them.
“They killed six people, injured dozens, and kidnapped a number of others. “The whole area is in shock, and some residents are moving to other areas,” our source said.
Deputy Governor of Sokoto, Maniru Dan’iya, who visited the area, condoled them over the incident and reiterated their commitment to ending banditry in the state.
According to him, the state government would pay the injured’s medical bills.
