Businessman Ali Yakubu Numan has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for insulting the state’s governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
In July 2021, Ali Yakubu Numan took to Facebook on several occasions to criticize the governor of Adamawa State. According to him, Gov Finitri was “a thief and father of all thieves in Nigeria” who stole hundreds of billions of Naira from state coffers.
As a result, Numan was arraigned by the Attorney General of Adamawa State for defamation.
In an order handed down by Yola Chief Magistrate Court II on Wednesday, August 12, Judge Japhet Basani convicted the businessman and sentenced him to two and a half years in prison and a fine of N50,000 for using abusive language against Fintiri.
In addition, he was sentenced to six months in jail without the option of a fine for disturbing the peace.
Magistrate Basani ruled on the case on Wednesday, saying that the court reached its verdict after finding the man guilty of both charges brought against him by the prosecution.
