FW de Klerk, South Africa’s last white president, died on Thursday at the age of 85. He organization shared a video hours after his death in which he apologized for atrocities against people of color.

In a statement, de Klerk apologized “without qualification” for “the grief and the hurt and the indignity and the devastation that apartheid has done to Black, Brown, and Indians in South Africa,” he said.

“I’m profoundly worried about the eroding of many components of the Constitution, which we observe nearly day to day,” he said in his message, as well, that the nation faces many major difficulties.
