A gang of robbers attacked travelers in the Wanzamai village in Zamfara State’s Tsafe Local Government Area, and five troops fought back.
The robbers opened fire on the troops’ trucks on Wednesday afternoon, October 13, while they were responding to a distress call
There were several motorists kidnapped by the bandits, according to eyewitnesses who reported the event on a route heading to Gusau between Kucheri and Wanzamai.
The dead troops’ weapons were allegedly stolen by the armed robbers.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, the State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara, acknowledged the assault but did not provide any fatality numbers.
Maryam Gatawa, a professor at the Federal University of Gusau, told Premium Times that the assault continued for almost 30 minutes.
She barely avoided being kidnapped, according to Mrs Gatawa.
“When our car pulled up, they’d just completed kidnapping individuals. “I witnessed people fleeing their houses in the villages for their own protection,” she said.
She went on to say that the troops lost their lives in the course of fending off the attackers.
