According to a Taliban official, Anas Haqqani, a top Taliban commander and leader of the Haqqani Network militant group, met former Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of setting up a government.
The Taliban official, who declined to be identified, said Karzai was accompanied by the old government’s peace envoy, Abdullah Abdullah. No further details were provided.
Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, was captured on Sunday by a faction of the Taliban known as the Haqqani Network. Over the past few years, the network, based on the border with Pakistan, has been accused of some of the deadliest militant attacks in Afghanistan.
