The former president of Chad, Hissene Habre, who was jailed for war crimes and crimes against humanity after the Cold War, died on Tuesday in Senegal, according to a spokesperson for the Senegalese justice ministry.

Habre fled to Senegal after being ousted in a coup in 1990. After eight years in power, he was convicted of rape, murder, and torture against thousands of political opponents.
