In celebratory gunfire in Kabul on Saturday, 17 people were killed, news agencies reported, after Taliban sources said their fighters had seized Panjshir, the last province in Afghanistan resisting the Islamist group.
Taliban opponents have denied that the province has fallen.
Shamshad reported Friday that an “aerial shooting” killed 17 people and wounded 41 more in Kabul. The Tolo news agency reported a similar figure.
Gulzada Sangar, spokesman for an area hospital in the provincial capital of Jalalabad, said at least 14 people were injured in celebratory firing in Nangarhar province east of the capital.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s main spokesman, rebuked the firing.
In a message on Twitter, Mujahid urged people to thank God rather than shoot in the air. “Don’t shoot unnecessarily. Bullets can harm civilians.”
