Gunmen have raided Omoba Police Station in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia. The Nation learnt the incident occurred on Monday evening.
The gunmen, it was gathered, killed one police operative during the raid.
Residents confirmed to The Nation the killed operative was one Williams during the raid that lasted for three hours.
The gunmen, numbering 16, reportedly caught the police officers off guard, overpowered them and carted away arms from the armory.
They were said to arrive in the Omoba community on motorcycles through Umuene, a neighbouring community where they waited till nightfall.
The source stated around 8:00 pm, the gunmen reportedly stormed the police station and opened fire on police officers upon gaining entrance.
The gunmen were said to have overpowered the few men on duty who tried to repel them.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the attack but stated that no arrest has been made at the time of filing the report.
The attack occurred less than one week after a police van was attacked and a policeman killed by gunmen at Uratta junction along the ever-busy Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
