Ibrahim Babangida (IBB), former military president of Nigeria, has said the next president should be able to understand the economy.
In an interview with Arise TV on Friday, he said he has observed individuals with those qualities and it would be good to have them in power.
‘If you get a good leader who is in touch with the people, and talks to them, rather than talking over them, then we’ll be fine,’ he said.
A vision of a good Nigerian leader has begun to take shape in my mind. A person who travels across the country and has friends virtually everywhere he goes, and knows at least one person with whom he can communicate.
“Nigerians are very resilient and resourceful, so leaders must make use of this to achieve a common objective.
“This is a person who is very knowledgeable in economics and also a good politician, who should be able to communicate with Nigerians. Leaders should understand Nigeria and Nigerians. A leader must use his intellect to understand the people.”
When asked if he believed the person would emerge in 2023, he said, “I believe so, if we can get him.”
In addition, IBB advised the current administration to adjust its economic policies, stating, “There is too much control over the way the economy is run. We should open up the economy and utilize our God-given resources.”
Leadership is to blame for the increasing banditry in the country, he said.
