A boat mishap in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Thursday claimed the lives of 13 people, including women and children.
According to reports, the victims were traveling from Doruwa to Ginga when the boat capsized.
Alhajo Aliyu Dantine Shagari, chairman of the local government council, confirmed the incident and said eight victims were married women and five children and elderly men.
The boat might be overloaded, he said.
“But there are other causes of boat mishaps, such as strong winds,” he said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
All of their bodies had been recovered and buried according to Islamic tradition.
In a similar incident last year, they lost six people.
In condolences to the people of Shagari, Governor Tambuwal promised to provide them with motorised boats and life jackets.
His prayer was that Allah grant the deceased eternal rest, as well as fortitude to their families in the face of loss.
Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, chairman of the Senate Committee on Defense, also noted the tragedy as shocking and saddening.
According to Wamakko, the tragedy occurred just nine days after a similar tragedy claimed the lives of over one hundred people in Warrah Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Moreover, he prayed that Allah grant the bereaved families, as well as the people and governments of Shagari Local Government and Sokoto State, the fortitude to bear the irreparable losses.
