Eight people have been killed in the Yelewta community of the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The killings occurred when traders were closing for the day, according to witnesses.
Caleb Aba, chairman of Guma Local Government Area, told newsmen in Makurdi by telephone that the victims were hacked to death.
He said that it was Yelewta market day and the market had hardly closed for the day when the gun-welding invaders attacked and killed eight people on the spot.
During a market day, people were still going about their business when they (the attackers) opened fire. “Eight people were killed, one was abducted and has not been seen since,” he said.
According to the chairman, the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.
When contacted, Ibrahim Galma, the State Secretary of the Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), said he was unaware of any such development.
Members of his association were also distanced from the killings.
DSP Catherine Anene, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed that six people were killed by gunmen.
On the 24th of August, 2021, at about 7:45pm, the police received information that unknown gunmen had invaded the Yelwata community and attacked the first compound closest to the forest.
As soon as the police were called to the area, the gunmen were able to be repelled, but regrettably, they had shot six people before the police arrived.
According to the police, six people were taken to the hospital, two of whom died upon arrival, while the other two are being treated at the hospital.”
Akingbola Olatunji, the Commissioner of Police, has visited the community to offer condolences to families who have lost loved ones, according to Anene.
According to him, the command will continue to support the Yelwata community.
