According to the police, six armed bandits killed former presidential aide Ahmed Gulak in Owerri, Imo state, on Sunday.
A police spokesperson in Imo State, Bala Elkana, stated shortly after the politician’s murder that only Gulak was killed by the bandits as he rode his vehicle to the airport.
Despite the security situation in the state, Elkana said Gulak left his hotel room in Owerri on Sunday morning in order to catch a flight at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, without informing the police.
Abutu Yaro, the state’s commissioner of police, had ordered a discreet investigation into the murder case.
“On the 30th of May, at about 07:20 hours, armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry taxi carrying Ahmed Gulak and two others who were on their way to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a flight.
The Police nor security agencies were notified of Ahmed Gulak’s departure from Protea Hotel due to the fragile security situation in the South East and Imo state in particular.
Several armed bandits who were riding in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified, and shot Ahmed Gulak shortly after his departure without escorting security by the cab driver as he took an irregular route to the airport.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Abutu Yaro, fdc, has ordered a discreet investigation, as tactical and special forces have been mobilized to cordon off the area and arrest the perpetrators.”
