According to the Agency of Criminal Investigations, three convicted terrorists, one of whom was involved in a 2015 assault that claimed the lives of 148 people, were apprehended on Thursday after escaping from a high security prison in Nairobi, the directorate said.

The three guys were apprehended as they attempted to cross the border into Somalia and were currently being transported back to Nairobi, according to the Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti.

Among the escapees was Mohamed Ali Abikar, who was sentenced to 41 years in prison for a 2015 assault on Garissa University in eastern Kenya, which resulted in the deaths of 148 people, the majority of whom were students.

The other two escapees from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison were Joseph Juma Odhiambo, who was imprisoned in 2019 for attempting to join the Somali militant Islamist group al Shabaab, and Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga, who was arrested in 2012 for his participation in a foiled attack on parliament in the same year.

The police had characterized all three escapees as “dangerous,” and they had offered a reward of 60 million Kenyan shillings ($535,240) for information that may lead to their detention and capture of the others.

When the group inquired about directions to Boni Forest, which is close to the Somali border, they aroused concerns, according to the Daily Nation. According to the Daily Nation, which cited eyewitnesses, the escapees seemed dishevelled and one was hobbling.

President Uhuru Kenyatta fired the country’s prisons chief, Wycliffe Ogallo, on Wednesday as a result of the breakout, according to a statement released by Kenyatta’s office.

Following the escape, eight employees who worked at the jail were charged with their involvement, according to a document obtained by Reuters from the Director of Public Prosecutions and obtained by Reuters.
