COVID-19 antiviral tablet produced by Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics was approved by the UK on Thursday, making it the first nation in the world to do so, a boost to the battle against the pandemic.

It has been suggested that molnupiravir be taken as soon as feasible after a positive COVID-19 test and within five days of the beginning of symptoms, citing clinical evidence.

With its approval, the first antiviral oral therapy for COVID-19 is now available to patients outside of the United States. Molnupiravir will be voted on by U.S. health experts this month.

This epidemic, which has killed more than 5.2 million people globally, has so far been treated using vaccinations as the primary treatment method. It is normally only given to patients who have been hospitalized, such as Gilead’s (GILD.O) infusion antiviral remdesivir and generic steroid dexamethasone

For people at high risk of developing severe COVID-19 when given Molnupiravir early on, studies last month indicated it might reduce the risk of death or hospitalization by half.

When taken twice daily for five days, the medicine is supposed to tamper with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is marketed as Lagevrio in Britain.

In “due time,” the British government and NHS will reveal how the therapy will be administered to patients.

Sajid Javid, the health minister, said in a statement that “we are working at speed across the government and with the NHS to spell out preparations to deliver molnupiravir to patients as soon as feasible.”

Britain’s permission comes at a time when the government is struggling to control an epidemic of diseases.

According to the current seven-day average, the nation experiences roughly 40,000 instances of COVID-19 per day. Only the United States, which has five times as many people, has a daily death toll of 74,000.

COVID-19 prevalence in England touched its highest level on record last month, with a spike in the south-west of the nation leading the way, according to data published on Wednesday night.

As the government’s “Plan B” to safeguard the NHS from unsustainable demands grows, so does the pressure on the government to execute it.

Last month, the UK and Merck struck an agreement for the supply of 480,000 courses of molnupiravir each.
