Nigerians have been advised not to consume frozen poultry products and other food items preserved with formalin by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The chemical Formalin is commonly used to preserve human bodies in morgues.
Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, the NAFDAC spokesman, said in an interview with NAN that chicken and turkey products had been preserved with formalin by unscrupulous business owners. He warned that Formalin can preserve such products for weeks before they reach consumers.
“NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians to this practice. There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, despite Federal Government’s ban,” Jimoh said
The NAFDAC spokesman also urged consumers not to patronize businesses that smuggle poultry products into the country at the expense of the economy. In his view, if such patronage continues, indigenous poultry farmers and marketers will not grow as they wish, since the money spent on the smuggled products will only benefit the producers of the products.
