Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), announced that there are 59 suspected monkeypox cases and 15 confirmed cases in the country.

An outbreak would be declared when there is a large cluster of monkeypox cases that constitute an emergency, Ihekweazu said in response to the reports of a United States resident testing positive for the disease upon arrival in the North-American country from Nigeria.

Besides revealing that the NCDC has been working with state health ministries to strengthen monkeypox disease surveillance and response in the country, Ihekweazu also stated that Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers and Lagos have the highest number of cases.

NCDC’s DG urged Nigerians who feel unwell or have sudden rashes to visit a hospital for diagnosis and treatment
