The Niger State Police Command has arrested two suspected human traffickers and rescued five female victims.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 6, the command spokeswoman, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, said the suspects were attempting to take the victims to Libya via Kano State.
“On 01/07/2021 at about 1145hrs, Police operatives attached to ‘B’ Division Suleja intercepted and arrested; (1) Osaruwumen Ewodaru 49yrs ‘m’ of Opasa-Kpamba of Edo State and (2) Olaoluwa Adebanjo 43yrs ‘m’ of Ido Airport road Abuja,” he stated.
“On their way to Kano on the Abuja-Kaduna highway, the suspects entered the city and were intercepted and arrested with five female victims. Many of the victims were 18-23 years old from Ondo, Edo, Delta and Ogun states respectively.
Osaruwumen confessed to having taken one of the victims from Benin to embark on the joruney, and he was also in possession of a marriage certificate to claim that the victim was his wife in order to clear any suspicions away. Olaoluwa served as a transporter who received and assembled victims at Ido Park, Abuja for movement to Kano State before crossing to Libya.
Wasiu said the five victims have been rescued, and the case is being investigated, while the suspects will be transferred to FCID, Abuja for further investigation. Individuals, especially parents and guardians, should be encouraged not to send children on unnecessary journeys to find means of livelihood.
