A catastrophic traffic accident along the Ogbomosho-Ilorin expressway in Kwara State claimed the lives of seven passengers, including two daughters, 21 other people were critically hurt in the tragedy, which occurred at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday.

According to reports, the 18-seater white Mazda bus with registration number ZUR 159 XJ was on its way to Lagos when its tyre blew owing to overloading at Ote Village, Asa Local Government Area of the state, resulting in the disaster.

Jonathan Owoade, the Kwara Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the occurrence, saying that both the injured and the deceased were brought to Ilorin General Hospital and Garin Alimi Hospital.

“Due to covid-19 limits, the accident involved an 18-seater bus that should have only been transporting 14 passengers.” However, there are 18 people on board, including children. This is why we’ve always advised about overloading and overspeeding,” he continued.

During the rescue, he expressed gratitude to the state ministry of health for deploying additional ambulances.
