The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sealed houses at Ngozika Estate in Awka, the state capital, that are allegedly linked to the immediate past governor of Anambra state, Willie Obiano.
Antigraft agents posted a sign on the properties asking visitors to stay away. According to the notice,
‘EFCC, Keep Off. Under Investigation’
Remember that the former governor was detained by the agency on his trip to the United States on March 17th. His arrest came just hours after he handed over power to Professor Charles Soludo, the next governor.
The former governor was arrested on suspicion of “misappropriation of state monies,” including N5 billion in Sure-P and N37 billion in security votes that were allegedly removed in cash. Part of the monies were also allegedly diverted to fund state political operations.
Obiano was placed on the EFCC’s watch list a few months before his term ended, just as the commission warned that he had questions to answer about alleged misconduct while in government.
After six days in EFCC custody, he was granted administrative bail on March 24.
