The Katsina-Jibia Road was reportedly blocked by bandits on Wednesday, and an unknown number of commuters were taken hostage.

Sometime around 5 o’clock in the evening, according to eyewitness accounts, the settlement of Kadobe was attacked.

The source said that around six motorcycle-riding thugs occupied the road and shot at passing motorists to scare them off before kidnapping the people from two cars.

They arrived on roughly six motorcycles, so their total number couldn’t have exceeded twenty. Instead of setting up a roadblock, they just stood in the middle of the road and started shooting into the air. Two of the cars lost control and went off the road, and the shooters kidnapped the people inside, he claimed.

According to the eyewitness, security forces were alerted of the operation while it was happening, but they didn’t arrive until around 30 minutes after the attackers had already fled.

Despite several security checkpoints and a military barracks, the Katsina-Jibia Road has recently become a popular route for bandits
