At least 18 people have perished and six have been declared missing following the capsize of a boat on a river in Katsina State’s Mai’adua Local Government Area.
According to a resident, Lawal Sakatare, the canoe transporting 24 Sallah celebrants collapsed on Wednesday, May 4, at approximately 11:00 p.m. The overwhelming majority of those who perished in the water were small children.
“Fourteen of them were residents of Tsabu village, while four were residents of Dogon Hawa village. Fifteen of the 18 passengers were buried today (Thursday) in Mai’adua, while the remaining six remain unaccounted for,” he said.
He added that a team from the impacted villages was currently on a search and rescue mission, attempting to identify the last six survivors despite dwindling hope of survival.
Among the dignitaries who attended the victims’ funerals were the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ya’u Umar Gwajo-Gwajo.
