President Muhammadu Buhari has termed the alleged deaths of tens of persons on Friday night in Abaezi woodland in Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State as a “catastrophe and a national disaster.”
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, the President instructed the nation’s military forces, security, and intelligence services to step up their efforts to crack down on illegal refineries.
President Buhari stated the responsibility for the loss of lives and property must fall firmly on the sponsors of the illegal refinery, “who must all be apprehended and brought to justice.”
He expressed “the whole depth and range of the nation’s shock and anguish” to the victims’ relatives, the Ohaji Egbema community, and the administration and people of Imo State.
The President implored community leaders, police, and the secret service to never allow the heartbreaking episode to happen again in any region of the country.
