Delta, a major US airline, will no longer operate its New York–JFK–Lagos route as of October 4, 2022.

The airline explained the route cancellation by citing the need to adapt to “the current demand climate.”

The message did confirm that flights between Lagos and Atlanta were still being operated.

The airline started serving the route in December 2021 in order to meet demand for more flights within Nigeria.

It was however not apparent whether the suspension was prompted by its inability to repatriate its funds as additional foreign airlines reassess their operations in Nigeria over $465m blocked funds.

Despite pressure from international airlines, the Nigerian government has only now delivered $265m of the funds.

In light of the present demand situation, Delta has decided to temporarily cease its nonstop service between New York-JFK and Lagos. The airline still provides nonstop flights between Lagos and Atlanta, with connections available to New York and other U.S. locations.

Those who were affected by the cancellation of our New York-JFK to Lagos trip will be rebooked on one of Delta’s other domestic or international flights, or on one of our international flights with one of our joint venture partners. Delta’s dedication to the Nigerian market has not wavered.
