The Delta State Government has warned against any individuals or groups enforcing the sit-at-home order in the state capital, Asaba, and its surrounding areas.

Monday in Asaba, Delta State Government Secretary Patrick Ukah issued the warning in a statement.

Mr. Ukah stated, “Any group of people or organisation seeking to disrupt the calm in the state would be dealt with accordingly.”

The warning was issued one week after the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) purportedly vowed to enforce the order in the state.

Ari Ali, the commissioner of police in Delta State, downplayed the threat and stated that the police in Delta had been placed on high alert.

According to a report by the Tribune Newspaper, he ordered police agents to remain vigilant and “act forcefully” with any individual or group aiming to sow chaos in the state.

IPOB has imposed a sit-at-order throughout the South-East to exert pressure on the Nigerian government to release their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is being prosecuted for alleged terrorism.

The injunction, which has paralysed economic activity in the five South-eastern states of Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Anambra, is predominantly enforced on the days Mr. Kanu is scheduled to appear in court for his trial.

Delta State is located in the South-South area, not the South-east region. Mr. Kanu wishes to “liberate” the Igbo, the major ethnic group in the state’s south-eastern region, who make up a sizable portion of the state’s population.

Mr. Ukah, the Delta SSG, issued the following warning: “Security agencies have been put on red alert and tasked with ensuring that such dangers posed by unscrupulous people are swiftly eliminated.”

Mr. Ukah urged state residents to carry out their legal obligations without fear. He reassured them that the government was committed to protecting lives and property.
