Following the release of his campaign posters for the 2023 presidential election, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded that the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, quit immediately and be investigated.
The PDP claimed that Emefiele’s partisan affiliation and entanglement with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was verified by the placement of posters of him on the APC’s platform.
The party’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said in a statement on Friday that the CBN governor’s partisan inclinations, which by law should be non-partisan and apolitical, were the pinnacle of impunity for President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
He claimed that Emefiele’s actions amounted to poking Nigerians in the eyes and daring them to do worse, and that his actions were in violation of section 9 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, which states that “the governor and deputy governors shall devote the whole of their time to the service of the bank, and while holding office, shall not engage in any full or part-time employment or vocation, whether remunerated or not, and shall not engage in any
“Mr Emefiele has knowingly and deliberately breached the provision of the CBN legislation stated above by engaging in partisan politics to the extent of appearing in APC campaign posters.”
“Emefiele has also desecrated the sanctity of his office as CBN governor, compromised the apex bank’s integrity, stripped it of the trust reposed in it by Nigerians and the international community, and as a result, cannot legitimately continue to hold and function in that office,” the statement reads in part.
