Two police checkpoints were assaulted by Unknown Gunmen in Nsukka, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, killing one officer and torching a patrol car.
It was determined that the attack occurred in the early morning hours of June 17th.
A police officer was killed near Umanu intersection in Nsukka, Enugu while a police car was set ablaze on Ibeagwa-Ani route.
A witness told NAN that residents heard intermittent gunfire about 6:20 a.m. After that, they hurried to the intersection and discovered the dead officer on the ground.
“I hurried to my doors to check that they were all securely secured. “Believing it was armed robbers, I turned off all the electric lights in my home and urged my wife and children to be silent,” he claimed.
He stated that immediately the gunfire ceased, he rushed to the intersection and discovered the lifeless corpse of the police officer.
“They reported the officer was murdered in a gunfight between the police squad at the checkpoint and the militants,” he explained.
A merchant who was a witness at the Ibeagwa-Ani Road incident in which a police van was set on fire stated that he was in a commercial bus travelling to Nkwo Ibeagwa-Ani Market when he saw a police van blazing with five armed men whose faces were concealed observing the vehicle.
“Our driver swiftly turned direction and drove to a safer distance, where we remained until the shooters sped away while firing erratically. “When we arrived at the scene of the accident, the vehicle had already been reduced to ashes, so we waited a few minutes like other motorists before continuing our route,” he stated.
Daniel Ndukwe, a spokesperson for the State Police Command, has verified the occurrence.
“Today there was an attack on operatives in Nsukka, but information are unclear,” he stated.
