Two police officers were killed when Gunmen set fire to the Umuguma Divisional Police Headquarters in Imo State’s Owerri West Local Government Area in the early hours of Saturday.
The attack occurred just hours after Isaac Akinmoyede, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9, Umuahia, left the state after a one-day working visit.
It also happened just a few days after two warders from a Joint Security Task Force were slain in Okigwe when gunmen ambushed their patrol van.
According to reports, the gunmen had barricaded the highways going into and out of the station division, including one near the local government headquarters.
They then launched an attack on the station by hurling improvised electronic devices into the structures.
It was also learned that after setting fire to the station, they waited to attack officers who fled for shelter.
According to an eyewitness, the two cops were unlucky to run into a hail of bullets.
Ifeanyi and Iyke were given their names simply as Ifeanyi and Iyke.
They were said to be Imo State University, Owerri, undergraduates.
Micheal Abattam, the state police spokesperson, was unavailable for comment.
