One trader was shot dead and several others kidnapped when gunmen stormed a market in the Akpanya-Agbedo community of the Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area in Kogi State.

On Sunday, August 14, at around 2 p.m., many assailants opened fire randomly in an attempt to terrify the local populace.

Johnson, a local shopkeeper, was killed by a stray bullet, and Edwin Etodo was among the several others kidnapped and pushed into the bush.

The kidnappers reportedly called the relatives of the victims and demanded N20M in ransom.

As confirmed by William Aya, spokesman for the State police Command, in a statement released on Monday, August 15th, Aya described the incident as a “invasion in the market” in which Johnson, the owner of a shop, was killed and Edwin, among many others, were taken to an unknown location.

He also said that the authorities have sent in their best squad to restore order and work with local groups to track down and apprehend the criminals responsible.
