Three persons were slain by gunmen in a new attack on Naka town in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday night.
Our correspondent reports that displaced people from nearby villages have been housed in Naka, a rural commercial town and the headquarters of Gwer West LGA.
According to witnesses, the latest attack on the town occurred about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, when inhabitants began to flee for their lives after hearing loud gunshots near the Comprehensive College in Naka.
The assailants, who were dressed in military clothes, allegedly shot and killed three persons on the spot before being resisted, according to the neighbors.
Mrs Grace Igbabon, the Chairman of Gwer West, informed media in Makurdi that the assailants were armed herdsmen riding motorbikes and causing mayhem among villagers.
When contacted, Mohammed Risku, the state chairman of the Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), stated he was unaware of the event and that he had just finished a meeting with the security adviser.
Meanwhile, Chief Daniel Abomtse, the traditional ruler of the affected local government, Ter Nagi, informed newsmen in Makurdi that three of his subjects had been slain by the intruders.
“On 29/03/2022 at approximately 2005hrs, armed individuals entered Agabge-Naka road, Gwer-west LGA and started firing irregularly,” stated Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Catherine Anene, who verified the event. Two people were proven deceased as a result of the inquiry, and their bodies were interred to Fr. Mathias Morgue.
“The public is urged to collaborate with the investigators who are working on the case.”
“This heinous crime is abhorrent and unacceptably cruel. The command, in concert with other security agencies, has made changes to the area’s security architecture to avoid repeat attacks.”
Meanwhile, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom expressed his sorrow on Wednesday over the ongoing invasion and death of Benue people by suspected armed herdsmen.
In a statement issued by Ortom’s spokesperson, Nathaniel Ikyur, the armed invaders’ actions in Benue have resulted in hundreds of people being cut to death in unprovoked attacks in recent times.
As a result, he urged the people of Benue to stand up and protect themselves.
On Tuesday, March 29th, 2022, the governor claimed, coordinated attacks occurred in the state’s Guma, Kwande, and Gwer West local government districts.
According to a report from the team commander of security agencies in Kasekyo near Tse Torkula village in Guma local government, suspected herders shot one Turner Ajar and an unnamed elderly man who were on their way to the farm at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29th, 2022.
