Saturday, a police convoy was ambushed along the Idema-Otuabagi Road in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, resulting in the deaths of one officer and four civilians.

According to a community source, the terrible incident occurred while the victims were coming from the funeral of a deceased police officer, named as ASP Gilbert Sampson.

According to him, the gunmen were likely kidnappers.

SP Asinim Butswat, a spokesman for the police in Bayelsa State, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the Commissioner of Police has ordered a manhunt for the perpetrators of the heinous crime, while an investigation is ongoing to determine the identities of those responsible.

“On 14 May 2022, at approximately 07:45 hours, unknown assailants ambushed Rivers Command Policemen returning from the burial of ASP Gilbert Sampson in Imago Kugbo, Rivers State, on the Idema- Otuabagi Road in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State,” he added.

“The armed suspects started fire on the car transporting the police officers and passengers. PC Asuo Osuani’m’ and Special Constabulary Odeoye Sampson’m’, Mr Terry Lucky’m’, Jennifer Adejo ‘f’, and Asueroh Tobins ‘f’ were fatally shot during the incident and eventually died. “While Inspector Urere Edwin, Rejoice Sampson ‘f’, and Reward Sampson ‘f’ sustained bullet wounds, they are responding well to therapy,” he stated.
