Governor Hope Uzodinma has issued gunmen operating in the state of Imo a 10-day ultimatum to lay down their rifles.

The governor, who requested that the gunmen leave the state’s forests and give themselves and their weapons to the traditional authorities in exchange for full amnesty, also disclosed that the state would host the annual Army Day celebration from June 30 to July 6.

According to Hope Uzodinma, no less than 10,000 military troops, including members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police, will be there.

He also disclosed that the president, who is expected to declare open the Army Day celebration, has set July 12 and 13 as the dates he will commission the Owerri-Orlu and Owerri-Okigwe roads, perform the flag-off of the construction of the Owerri-Mbaise-Umuahia (from the Fire Service) and the Orlu-Akokwa roads, and lay the foundation for the Imo International Conference Centre in Owerri.

Uzodinma added that the state would get military equipment that would be utilized to rid the state of any remaining militants lurking in bushes.

He said;

“The state is more determined now than before to clear all bandits and to achieve this, the expected equipment and additional recruitment of more Ebube-Agu personnel working in collaboration with the security agencies in the state will be used to clear all the waterways and ride the state of gunmen including crude-oil theft. 

“All the waterways are under surveillance with the delivery of new Naval Equipment to the Naval Base in Oguta.”
