Delegates from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) clashed at the party’s Imo State chapter conference.
The trouble began when the chairman of the party in Owerri zone, Chidiebere Oja, insisted on cancelling the congress due to suspicions that certain members were plotting to takeover the party.
He and other party members who had assembled at the party’s Wethral Road office for the congress asked that the procedure be halted.
The argument escalated into a brawl as participants freely flung chairs and other adjacent objects at one another.
They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) personnel who had been invited to participate in the exercise to leave.
Chidi Oziri, the SDP’s Oguta local government area chairman, and his Okigwe LGA counterpart, Nwankwo Maduka, got into a heated argument.
The disagreement between the two chieftains aroused the attention of their supporters, with each group attempting to protect their leader.
Mr. Ben Anochie, the party’s state chairman, told reporters that the exercise had to be halted to restore order.
He stated that a new date for the congress will be announced following a meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC).
