Israeli forces murdered one Palestinian and injured three others Tuesday during an arrest operation in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry reported.

The Israeli Forces stated that its soldiers opened fire after being pelted with rocks and firebombs as they approached a refugee camp near the city of Jericho.

Israel has increased military operations in the West Bank, where Palestinians desire independence, following a wave of deadly street assaults last month in Israeli cities.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, Ahmed Ibrahim Oweidat, 20, died after being shot in the head. Three persons were injured and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh of Palestine condemned the assassination and criticised “Israeli atrocities” in the West Bank.

According to an Israeli army spokeswoman, troops were conducting “counterterrorism action” in the Aqabat Jabr Refugee Camp when they were attacked by scores of Palestinians.

“The protesters set fire to tyres and pelted troops with rocks and Molotov bombs. Troops responded by employing riot dispersal techniques and live ammunition “According to the spokeswoman, no Israeli soldiers were hurt.

Palestinians threw rocks towards the troops, witnesses reported. Locals said that Israeli troops captured two Palestinians, a father and son.

The assassination occurs amid a wave of recent violence in the West Bank and Israel.

Since March 22, Arab assailants have murdered 14 individuals in Israel, including three police officers, while Israeli forces have killed at least 17 Palestinians in the West Bank, doctors said. The victims included gunmen and civilians.
